Measurement for Recovery (M4R)

Building confidence in the future

World-class measurement science and engineering expertise for UK companies, free of charge

NPL and our National Measurement Laboratory partners are providing access to world-class specialist measurement science and engineering support, advice and facilities for UK companies free of charge.

Through our Measurement for Recovery (M4R) programme, we help organisations address a range of issues including design, manufacturing, production and processing, regulatory compliance product development. We’re helping deliver innovation, uncover efficiencies and bring confidence to decision making and investment to drive growth for your company and UK industry.

Available to UK companies, large and small, M4R is providing up to 20 days specialist science and engineering expertise. The programme includes:

  • Access to science and engineering experts and their lab facilities
  • Up to 20 days specialist support specialist science and engineering advice, support and facilities from NPL and its partners, free of charge
  • Analysis, results and reports completed within the maximum 20 allocated days
  • A quick and simple application process, with a single online form and a maximum of 300 words to describe your project

How can Measurement for Recovery help your company?

Measurement for Recovery helps solve analysis or measurement issues that cannot be resolved using standard technologies and techniques. Our aim is to help boost resilience and competitiveness by bringing together the UK’s top scientists and facilities with companies, to address problems in innovative ways.

The M4R application process is quick and easy

M4R is a non-competitive programme, available to all registered UK companies. The application process is quick, simple and aims to have all successful applicants provided with direct access to the technical experts who will lead their project.

  • A single, easy on-line form (max 300 words to describe your challenge
  • A non-competitive programme
  • Fast application assessment
  • Direct contact with scientists and technical delivery teams.

  • To be eligible to apply, you must be:

  • A UK company registered at Companies House
  • Within your de minimis allocation (less than €200,000 of government funding over a three-year period)
  • The limit for M4R support is three projects during this financial year, so if you have previously accepted three or more M4R support projects during the financial year 20/21 you are ineligible


  • Companies who fit the criteria can apply using our online form.
    This programme does not pay for standard measurement and test services available commercially by NPL or other suppliers.

    Working with NPL gave us access to the latest chemical analysis technology which allowed us to solve a problem well beyond our capabilities and identify a solution. This overcame a major roadblock to manufacturing the final product on a commercial scale.

    SteelRock

    SteelRock created a capability to counter the threat of unauthorised drone usage. With NPL they were able to commercialise the product, which is safe to operate, safe to the surrounding environment and effective in identifying its target

    Adaptix

    Developing innovative materials for low-cost 3D medical imaging. Adaptix has developed a solution to the combined shortcomings of existing technologies: a novel X-ray source that allows low-cost, truly portable 3D scans.
