NPL is world-leading laboratory in the measurement of particles. We provide the underpinning standards, testing and characterisation methods used by industry to manufacture reliable particle-based products, ranging from drug delivery systems to catalysts.
We test and validate traditional and innovative methods to measure particle properties, including their chemistry, concentration, density, size and size distribution. We work with instrument manufacturers to develop new instrumentation for particle analysis and provide stakeholders with robust analytical tools. We lead and take part in international interlaboratory comparisons to develop best measurement practice and deliver confidence in measurements.
Our research is applied in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agritech, biomedical, fine chemicals, catalysis, electronic and oil and gas industries.

Principal scientist
Caterina joined NPL in July 2010. In 2014, she was seconded to the former Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to work at the development of the Science and Innovation Strategy published by the UK Government in December 2014.
