Enhancing the composite materials regulatory infrastructure

The National Physical Laboratory has published a report which identifies a series of actions that will increase the UK’s competitiveness through greater uptake of composite materials

The NPL report ‘Increasing UK competitiveness by enhancing the composite materials regulatory infrastructure’ has been produced in consultation with industry, through a cross sector workshop organised by NPL on behalf of the Composites Leadership Forum and review of relevant studies.

The recommendations will unlock the current regulatory barriers and increase the use of composite materials across the advanced manufacturing sector. They include:

  • The acceleration of standardisation and publication of technical documentation that address identified gaps in the regulatory infrastructure
  • The design and implementation of a digital tool and mentoring scheme to help industry adopt and certify novel materials
  • The creation of an advanced materials assurance centre to bring together the materials supply chain and regulators to deliver a central resource to provide access to trusted materials data

The full report has the backing and endorsements of many renowned industry and materials experts.
