Ultrasound

Consultancy services

Supporting the industrial application of ultrasound

Ultrasound can be applied in many ways to industrial processes from cleaning equipment and sieving powders through to more direct processing of materials to improve deagglomeration particles, improve crystallisation processes and facilitate reactive chemistry.  NPL has developed a wide range of techniques to test and measure the application of ultrasound to different processes in a range of industrial sectors.

NPL can help industries which are developing and applying ultrasonic technology in their manufacturing processes. Our wide range of tools and experience can be used to support proof of concept studies and our metrology skills will help quantify ultrasonic fields and cavitation intensity. Ultrasound is key to many industrial  applications, and we can help link observed process benefits to ultrasonic processing conditions and support efficient scale-up.

NPL reference vessel - a unique tool for proof-of-concept studies

Our consultancy services include:

  • Measurement of acoustic fields to map applied power against process benefit, and generate understanding of the correct ‘dose’
  • Mapping of cavitation, a key metric of process effectiveness
  • Equipment characterisation to build confidence and support regulation in process scale-up
  • Ultrasonic horns and cells to apply ultrasound at a range of specific powers and frequencies
  • A broad range of material characterisation capabilities to analyse products of the process, such as particle size and chemical composition
  • Strategic relationships with production-scale equipment providers to support process exploitation.
