Accurate monitoring of ambient air quality 

Monitoring of ambient air quality is important for regulatory purposes and industrial impact assessment. NPL's experienced staff can design monitoring campaigns; provide expertise and advice on optimum sampling techniques; and provide comprehensive data analysis, reporting and interpretation. 

Ambient air quality surveys provided by NPL are UKAS-accredited for sampling and analysis and can be used to: 

  • monitor boundary fences and community locations 

  • characterise industrial emissions in accordance with UK and EC legislation 

  • identify air quality zones and areas of exceedance 

  • monitor roadside and urban air quality 

  • validate pollution abatement measures 

  • support corporate environmental policy 

  • support and validate air dispersion models 

  • monitor occupational exposure and workplace air quality 

NPL offers a service based on pumped and diffusive sorbent tubes, enabling a wide range of species to be quantified cost effectively.  

NPL offers a complete service, accredited by UKAS to ISO 17025, for the sampling and analysis of complex volatile organic compounds (VOC) mixtures ranging from source emissions to ambient concentrations. Sample collection and analysis techniques includes: passivated canisters, pumped or passive sorbent tubes, automated thermal desorption (ATD), gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS).
