Accurate quantitative and qualitative analysis

NPL can provide high quality analysis of a wide range of sample matrices using the most up-to-date equipment, supported by experienced and knowledgeable staff.  Using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), NPL can perform quantitative determinations for the majority of elements on the periodic table, in concentration ranges from parts-per-thousand (ppt) to parts-per-million (ppm). The triple quadrupole feature provides the most versatile approach currently available for interference removal.

ICP-MS at NPL Metals Analysis LaboratoryNPL has extensive experience of metals analysis in ambient air samples as we are the operator of the UK Heavy Metals Network. Robust, UKAS accredited procedures have been developed for the determination of Vanadium (V), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Arsenic (As), Selenium (Se) Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) on cellulose filters or in acidic matrices by ICP-MS, and also vapour-phase mercury (Hg) by atomic fluorescence.

In addition to environmental monitoring, ICP-MS can be used to analyse the elemental composition of samples from a diverse range of fields, including pharmaceutical impurity testing, forensic analysis, radiochemical testing and semi-conductor applications. NPL can also develop specific methods in order to meet customers’ analysis requirements.
