Temperature measurements

Standard platinum resistance thermometers

Range: -196 °C to 962 °C

High accuracy calibrations

Standard platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs) are very high accuracy instruments which are sensitive to electrical noise and their thermal treatment is crucial. They are the instruments specified in the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (the ITS-90) for performing measurements within the range -259.3467 °C (the triple point of hydrogen) to 961.78 °C (the freezing point of silver).

SPRTs of the long-stem construction can be calibrated over various temperature ranges, depending on the application and required accuracy, by measurement at the appropriate ITS-90 fixed points between -196 °C to +962 °C. All the calibration services are fully UKAS (ISO 17025) accredited. The uncertainties achievable are as low as ±0.0017 °C at -196 °C, ±0.00016 °C at 0.01 °C and ±0.004 °C at 962 °C.

Thermometers that are not suitable for measurement in the ITS-90 fixed point apparatus, for example on account of length or immersion requirements, may be calibrated by comparison with standard thermometers in appropriate baths.
