NPL helped characterise their flat panel X-ray source down to sub-micron level to understand the chemistry below the surface. This has saved hundreds of thousands of pounds of wasted effort by giving Adaptix the data to inform development choices.
LMAT offers software and consulting to improve composite products, such as those used to form the structures of wind turbine blades or aeroplane wings. LMAT needed to measure reliable values for the shrinkage of the materials as a result of curing. They worked with NPL to develop reliable measurements that they could input into their model, helping them provide more accurately designed moulds for their customers.
NPL has world-leading capabilities in fuel cell measurements, as well as corrosion testing. Combining these areas of expertise, NPL carried out a range of analyses of Bramble's fuel cell materials to help them understand their degradation mechanisms, and recommend areas for improvement.
Energy Technology Centre Ltd (ETC) provides water droplet erosion testing for wind turbine blades. NPL worked with ETC to explore techniques for measuring material erosion during the testing process. Reducing erosion has a big economic benefit.
