Tony Fry

Tony Fry

Principal scientist

After completing his B.Eng in the Materials Department at the University of Surrey, Tony Fry joined NPL working on the measurement and control of bending strain in fatigue testing. He spent his early years at NPL working on a range of materials projects including modelling of thermoset polymers, characterising the thermal conductivity of casting waxes and conducting a range of ambient and high temperature mechanical tests.

Tony is a member of the ISO TC156 WG13 and CEN TC138 WG10 standards committee which are responsible for high temperature corrosion testing and residual stress measurement by XRD respectively.  He is also a member of IOM3 and is a committee member of the Energy Materials Group and High Temperature Mechanical Testing Committee (HTMTC).   He has (co)authored over 70 papers from his research work and also numerous reports as part of contract problem solving projects.

Areas of interest

The characterisation and performance of engineered surfaces with and without a coating under harsh environmental conditions (e.g. extremes of temperature, contact loading, corrosive, etc.). Tony is also involved in the measurement of residual stress using XRD and hole drilling. Work includes the development of testing procedures, understanding materials performance and more recently the characterisation and standardisation requirements for advanced manufacturing process such as additively manufactured materials at ambient and elevated temperature.
