For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Andrew Brown

Andrew Brown

Principal Scientist

Dr Andrew Brown is a Principal Scientist and the Science Area Leader of NPL’s Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group. His work focuses on traceable methods for the physical and chemical characterisation of particles in air; current research interests include:

  • establishing a metrological framework for the use of airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) as a tool for biodiversity monitoring
  • traceable measurements of the composition of non-exhaust vehicle emissions
  • exploring the use of particle surface area as a metric relevant to the negative health effects of airborne particles

Andrew also oversees the technical delivery of three of the UK’s air quality networks for the Environment Agency and Defra – the Heavy Metals Network, the Particle Concentrations and Numbers Network, and the Black Carbon Network.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Visiting Researcher in the Environmental Research Group at Imperial College London, a member of the UK Air Quality Expert Group, the Executive Secretary of the CCQM-GAWG Task Group on Aerosol Metrology, and a member of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science Partnerships Board. He has published more than 60 papers in peer‑reviewed journals.

Prior to joining the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group, Andrew spent a year on secondment at the Environment Agency developing a capability to use air quality data from satellite-based instruments to investigate regulated emissions to air. His previous roles at NPL include leading the energy gases research area and being Interim Lead of NPL’s Project Management Office.

Andrew has a PhD in physical polymer chemistry from the University of Durham and holds the Project Management Qualification from the Association for Project Management.
