Alan Brewin (he/him/his) is NPL’s Science and Engineering Director.
Alan is responsible for ensuring NPL’s science and engineering capability is both world-leading and future-proof. He oversees the organisation’s people, scientific facilities and equipment, and is accountable for the safe and effective delivery of all contracted research and services to commercial customers and government.
He is driven by turning scientific capability into impact for the UK government and economy, increasing external engagement and realising the potential of NPL’s talent ranging from postgraduate researchers to world class expert specialists.
Alan has previously held numerous roles, including Infrastructure Director, Operations Director, and Head of Analytical Science, and has led numerous research groups. He oversaw the formulation of the UK Government's National Measurement System programme and has operated within government to help establish the current ownership, governance and operating model for NPL.
In April 2022 Alan was elected chair of The National Laboratory Alliance (NLA), a collaborative group of Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs) established to help strengthen government science capability, share good practice and further the effectiveness and collective value of PSREs.
In June 2023 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry for his work to drive impact through scientific leadership.
