Principal scientist awarded Fellowship of the Institute of Physics

Geoffrey Barwood is recognised for significant impact in science

1 minute read

Geoffrey Barwood, Principal Scientist and Science Area Leader for the Atomic Clocks and Sensors group in the Time and Frequency department at NPL, has been awarded Fellowship of the Institute of Physics (FInstP). The Fellowship is awarded to physicists making a significant impact in their area of work.

During his time at NPL, Geoffrey has contributed to the development of optical frequency standards for the practical realisation of the metre and optical secondary representations of the second. As part of his work on future optical clocks, he has continued the development of the NPL patented cubic cavity which is the most successful design NPL has licenced for production.

He is contributing to cold-ion optical and microwave clock development and ongoing work into cubic cavities for space within European Space Agency (ESA) projects.

The Institute of Physics (IoP) is the professional body for physicists in the UK and Ireland and the fellowship award is the highest level of membership attainable.

On receiving this award Geoffrey Barwood said: “It’s great to have this recognition for leadership in time and frequency, particularly in cold-ion clocks and optical cavities that have application in several areas of science.”
