The measurement of hardmetal grain size should in principle be carried out on a regular basis by both the manufacturer and end user as part of a quality control system. However, there is no current standard for grain size measurement of hardmetals. The situation is further confused by the lack of an agreed tenninology. Grades of hardmetals which were considered "very fine" a decade ago could be considered to be "medium" grades today and the range of superlatives used to describe the microstructure has become confusing.
