From foundations to the future

An International Year of Quantum event

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is honoured to host one of just 11 flagship global events selected to mark the United Nations designated International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 (IYQ), a global initiative led by UNESCO to mark 100 years since the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Quantum Metrology: From foundations to the future kicks-off the UK’s quantum week and promises to be a truly unique day of insight, inspiration and international collaboration with leading voices in science, government and industry from across the globe.

Curated by NMI-Q (a global consortium of National Metrology Institutes from G7 countries and Australia), this high-profile gathering of the global quantum community will explore the role metrology and standards have at the heart of quantum innovation.

What to expect

  • A packed programme of keynotes, expert panels and global perspectives
  • Opportunities to connect with senior leaders, decision-makers and innovators
  • Exploration of real-world applications in health, navigation, computing and beyond
  • Celebratory moments recognising international progress and collaboration
  • A curated art gallery exploring the creative, historical and cultural dimensions of quantum science and technologies
  • An opportunity to reflect on the next decade of quantum development in a truly global context

The impact of Quantum Metrology: From foundations to the future will extend far beyond the day, with outcomes feeding into an international vision for quantum science, to be presented at the IYQ closing ceremony in 2026.
