We would like to invite PGI researchers to submit an abstract (maximum 300 words) for either a poster, oral presentation or “science in graphics” pitch at the 8th Conference of the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science, taking place on 7 and 8  November 2024 at The University of Manchester.

This is a great opportunity for early career scientists to improve their presentation skills and showcase their research to a wider audience, including industry partners, academics and NPL scientists.

Instructions for submitting an abstract

1. Eligibility: Note that you must be a PGI student to submit an abstract.

2. Select the talk format:

  • Poster: Present a printed A1 poster in a 60 second pitch on stage.
  • Oral presentation: Deliver a seven minute long-format talk, followed by a three-minute Q&A session.
  • Science in Graphics: Give a three-minute elevator pitch on your project using no more than three PowerPoint slides, followed by a two-minute Q&A session. Slides should contain only graphics and short titles.

3. Choose a theme:

Choose one theme that best relates to your research, and tailor your abstract submission to clearly show how your research fits into that theme. Click here for a full description of conference themes.

  • Theme 1: Curiosity-driven research

  • Theme 2: Metrology at scale
  • Theme 3: Cross-sector research
  • Theme 4: Resource, refine and reuse

4. Final checks – please ensure you have included the following information in your abstract submission:

  • Talk format
  • Chosen Theme
  • Attached Word document (max.300 words)
  • One JPEG image (optional)

5. Email abstract submissions to pgi@npl.co.uk 

All abstracts received by the deadline will be evaluated by the conference committee and selected for one of the above formats. Please note that submissions may be moved to the most suitable theme. Results for talk allocation will be announced on Thursday 1 August 2024.

If selected, you will be fully briefed prior to the conference, and could receive free presentation skills training from a professional provider.
