Industrial and summer placements

We are committed to inspiring the next generation. If you are motivated and eager to learn and can bring fresh ideas and perspectives, this might be the opportunity for you. You will acquire skills that will help you grow, and in return we get talented people who can make a difference.

NPL work with universities who belong to SEPnet (South East Physics Network). If your University is affiliated with this network, then please speak to your SEPnet contact who will be able to advise on how to apply for an industrial or summer placement at NPL.

For those of you whose learning institutions are not affiliated with SEPnet, we would recommend that you register your details via our careers site to receive an alert when relevant positions are advertised and submit an application via vacancies. In addition, you can visit our website for updates on our public outreach events and open days.

Join us for a summer

Summer placements can be undertaken during one of your summer holidays while you are studying. They are an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into life and work at NPL. We'll provide you with challenging assignments and all the support you'll need to make the most of the experience.

A unique year in industry

Industrial placements last 12 months and are usually undertaken in between your second and fourth year at university. To apply, your placement must be supported by your university. Our 12-month placements are aimed at students who have the skills and experience to add value to our company, as well as the potential to build a long-term career with us. We aim to recruit ambitious and capable people. It's important that you're passionate and eager to learn.

Improve your employability

Holly Stemp is studying for her PhD and spent her summer researching thermometers and the International Temperature Scale at NPL.

“Working at NPL definitely confirmed my desire to work in a research environment and showed me the wide variety of opportunities available. I was constantly asking the staff at NPL about their research and everyone was very happy to share their work with me, so I got to learn a lot about metrology/traceability of measurement and its importance in every aspect of our lives.  For any undergraduate who is interested in expanding their skill set and experiencing the real-world implications of what they are taught in lectures I would highly recommend carrying out a placement. Not only does it look great on your CV, it also provides some invaluable tools for a potential career in research in the future.”
