This Guide presents guidance for good practice in measurement of the surface tension and the shear and extensional flow properties of hot melt adhesives. It covers:
The measurement of surface tension of hot melt adhesives using the pendant drop method,
• the measurement of shear viscosity and entrance pressure drop by capillary extrusion rheometry,
• the measurement of melt flow rate behaviour using a simple extrusion rheometer, and
• the analysis of the melt flow rate results obtained using ‘long’ and ‘short’ dies to determine shear viscosity and entrance pressure drop data.
