Development of European standards for testing low-cost sensors

The need

Numerous low-cost monitoring devices have been developed to evaluate local air quality and gain insight into effects on human health and the wider environment. However, assessment low cost-sensor performance is required to ensure and enhance the accuracy of measuring air pollutant concentrations.

The impact

NPL is a member of CEN TC264 WG42 and contributes to the development of a Technical Specification (TS) for the evaluation of low-cost sensors (LCS).  We are also leading the writing of a UK Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for LCS for Defra.

NPL has developed unique type testing facilities to underpin the TS and assist the UK sensor industry to deliver fit-for-purpose products. This is providing confidence in the air quality measurements supporting citizen science research and government environmental legislation.
