Enrico Fontana

Post Graduate

Enrico Fontana is a computer science PhD student from the University of Strathclyde, working in the Quantum Information Processing group at NPL.

His background is in theoretical physics, graduating in BSc Physics from Imperial College London in 2018, after that moving to a MASt in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge. He began his 4-year PhD in October 2019. In addition to NPL, his PhD is sponsored by Quantinuum (formerly Cambridge Quantum Computing).

Enrico’s main research aim is developing noise-resilient quantum algorithms and software for quantum computers. To this end, his research employs a combination of theoretical research, software simulation and experiments on real quantum computers. He focuses on near-term algorithms, in particular variational quantum algorithms applied to problems in chemistry and optimisation. He also maintains an active interest in machine learning.
