Alex Korwin

Graduate Scientist

Alex Korwin is a Graduate Scientist in the Time & Frequency department. He joined NPL in September 2023 upon completion of his undergraduate degree in Physics at Keele University.

Alex’s current area of work is in optical frequency metrology, developing a remote monitoring and control system for use on the optical fiber links from NPL between Teddington, Birmingham and Paris. This is part of NPL’s program of work towards the redefinition of the SI second, enabling dissemination of stable frequencies and comparisons between optical clocks.

Areas of interest

  • Optical frequency dissemination and comparison through fiber optic links to enable the redefinition of the SI second
  • The use of optical frequency combs in frequency comparisons between optical atomic clocks
  • Optical atomic clock design and atom trapping and the role they will play in the redefinition of the SI second
  • The infrastructure required to provide resilient and accessible time and frequency signal dissemination, reflecting the precision necessary as technology progresses.
  • Designing resilient remote monitoring and control software for instruments and equipment to aid monitoring of large systems.
