Measurement for Recovery programme supports Taylor Garfit in development innovative PPE visor

Project Summary

PPECO is a brand of Taylor Garfit Ltd an independent design consultancy, based in Preston, who developed an innovative face visor in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The face visor, which can be produced at low cost for supply into the UK market will be affordable to developing nations. The current design uses cardboard frame and cellulose optic rather than a conventional polymer-based frame and optic. The design allows the single use device to be disposed of in a more environmental way than current products as it is fully biodegradable and recyclable.

NPL’s M4R programme helped PPECO by reviewing the CAD model of the device to determine the area of coverage and field of view as well as reviewing of the visor against relevant testing standards to identify and mitigate any issues. NPL also loaned a test head to do some simple testing on the design.

The M4R programme also helped PPECO address the challenges around ensuring that the current design will be able to meet the reduced testing requirements under Covid-19 provisions.

Customer Feedback

Our novel face visor design provides a low-cost PPE option for use in the UK and in developing nations. Access to the expertise of NPL through the M4R programme has enabled NPL’s team to provide independent testing of the performance of our visor design, alongside a review the data we have generated internally and will provide further confidence in our ongoing investment, product development and regulatory submission to support launch of the visor.
