NPL’s Chief Scientist receives Institute of Physics James Joule Medal and Prize

Dr Jan-Theodoor (JT) Janssen, Chief Scientist at NPL, has been awarded the

James Joule Medal and Prize from the Institute of Physics for his outstanding contributions to fundamental and practical quantum electrical metrology.

Dr JT Janssen has made world leading contributions to the field of single electron transport and the quantum Hall effect (QHE) for electrical metrology with his groundbreaking research on two important SI units, the ampere and the ohm. In both these cases JT’s work has been highly original and world-leading, resulting in several orders of magnitude improvement in accuracy, thereby enabling the long-held ambition of redefining the international measurement system.

The impact of JT’s research stretches well beyond the immediate metrology sphere and also benefits applications based on quantum technology and graphene. For example, the method JT developed to transport individual electrons very accurately can be used as a tool to study the behaviour of electrons in quantum systems.

Moreover, JT’s research on the QHE in graphene has transformed the field of primary resistance metrology with most leading metrology laboratories adopting this approach.

Of the award JT said “I’m extremely honoured to receive this award from the Institute of Physics and would like to thank my colleagues at NPL and international collaborators who worked with on this research for many years”
