NPL Scientists Present their Research at STEM for Britain 2023

Elizabeth Legge, Zeinab Al-Siddiqui, Yoana Hristova and Ana Lourenço were selected to present their work at NPL in Parliament

Four scientists from NPL were chosen this year to present at STEM for BRITAIN, a major scientific poster competition and exhibition held in Parliament organised by the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee. Its aim is to give members of the Houses of Parliament an insight into the outstanding research work being undertaken in UK by early-career researchers.

NPL’s  Elizabeth Legge, Zeinab Al-Siddiqui, Yoana Hristova and Ana Lourenço were selected from thousands of other candidates across the country to present their work and talk with experts in the field.

STEM4B-news-story-(1).png Ana Lourenço, presented and won the bronze award in the category of physics, for her research work on the development of the world's first primary standard for proton radiotherapy beams. Proton radiotherapy is an advanced form of cancer treatment that is proven to be particularly successful for treating children and complex tumours.

Liz Legge presented her work on pharmaceutical multiarticulate formulations (supplied by a major pharmaceutical company) and the use of advanced imaging methods to understand the stability, which is necessary to inform strategies for storage of medicines.

Zeinab Al-Siddiqui presented her work on understanding the biophysical properties of acne using atomic force microscopy. The study was the first of its kind to provide both qualitative and quantitative mechanobiological evidence that the biomatrix of acne can become more compliant in the presence of 2% sodium salicylate.

Yoana Hristova presented her work on the development of trace level hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas standards. HCl is an airborne molecular contaminant (AMC) which is detrimental to advanced manufacturing products and processes as it causes contamination layers resulting in unwanted downtime, decreased yield and profit loss.

This achievement is testament to Ana, Liz, Zeinab and Yoana’s dedication to the scientific community and their respective fields of research.
