NPL’s Head of Metrology receives prestigious awards

Professor Richard Brown's impact to science recognised

Professor Richard Brown, Head of Metrology at NPL, has recently been awarded the IUPAP SUNAMCO Senior Scientist Medal and admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP).

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics’ (IUPAP) Commission on Symbols, Units, Nomenclature, Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants (SUNAMCO) awards this medal to recognise outstanding contributions made by laboratories or individuals. Professor Brown has been recognised for his outstanding and sustained contributions to the development and promotion of the International System of Units.

This is the first time the award has been made for 10 years, the last winner being Ian Mills, former President of the International Committee for Weights and Measures’ Consultative Committee for Units. Previous winners also include Bryan Kibble, the BIPM, and Nobel laureate Theodor Hänsch.

In addition, Professor Brown has been admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP), which is the highest level of membership available and is for those who have made a significant impact on their sector.

Professor Brown has made many significant contributions to the scientific community throughout his career, including: playing a pivotal role in the revision of the SI in 2019, his international leadership in the areas of dimensionless quantities and the unit one, his seminal work to integrate chemical physics and the unit mole into the SI, his thought leadership concerning the value of metrology during the COVID-19 pandemic, and most recently his proposal to expand the range of SI prefixes adopted at the 27th CGPM in November 2022.
