NPL welcomes new National Vision for Engineering Biology

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), welcomes the UK Government’s new National Vision for Engineering Biology policy paper, announced by Minister Andrew Griffith, that sets out the £2 billion plan to seize the potential of engineering biology. The vision recognises the need for a truly collaborative approach from government, industry and the research community to make the UK a science and technology superpower and transform the economy through the implementation of engineering biology, a revolutionary technology that harnesses engineering principles as applied to biological systems.

Michael Adeogun, Head of Health & Life Sciences at NPL said, “We are pleased to see the government’s commitment to engineering biology and the role the technology will play across various sectors in addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our age from health to net zero and sustainability.”

As part of the UK’s National Measurement System and the UK Quality Infrastructure, NPL is pleased that its role in supporting the engineering biology community is recognised, particularly the need to engage with the community to develop and implement new standards, metrology and regulations that will support innovation and accelerate the translation of novel engineering biology-based products, processes and services to the marketplace. The measurement infrastructure that NPL will look to deliver in the future will support efforts both nationally and internationally by providing all stakeholders with the confidence in the products, processes and services being developed.
