NPL’s CEO awarded 2022 IOP Richard Glazebrook medal and prize

Dr Peter Thompson recognised in 2022 IOP awards

Dr Thompson has received the award for outstanding leadership of the National Physical Laboratory and the sustained impact of metrology on UK prosperity and quality of life.

Dr Thompson joined NPL as CEO in 2015 and has overseen development and growth in recent years aligned to the UK’s National Challenges. 

In particular, Dr Thompson’s leadership during the pandemic ensuring NPL delivered critical national infrastructure was highlighted by the IOP.

Additionally, Dr Thompson created a vision for an emergency programme that helped business recover and grow by providing access to NPL staff and facilities. To date, this programme has provided metrology solutions to more than 600 micro and small businesses, enabling them to scale up, attract investment, meet regulatory requirements and accelerate products to the marketplace.

Dr Thompson has transformed NPL’s approach to equality, diversity and inclusion with a values-led strategy by setting high standards for recruitment, retention and reward and leading by example.

On receiving the award, Dr Peter Thompson FREng commented, “I am honoured to have received the Institute of Physics Richard Glazebrook Medal and Prize. Every day I endeavour to lead an organisation where people can feel safe and secure as a valued member of the team and I am proud to work with, represent and lead such a talented workforce. My time at NPL has been filled with career-defining moments. From the launch of the National Timing Centre programme to the development of the UKs National Quantum Technology Programme metrology has been, and continues to be, recognised as crucial across all walks of life and in areas of national and international priority such as health, climate, prosperity and security and resilience.”
