Manufacturer Measurement Network

Helping SME manufacturers to be more productive, agile and quality oriented

Small manufacturing businesses are the lifeblood of UK industry, providing parts and services to primes and higher tier assembly businesses. Being a small manufacturer does not lessen the need to produce quality parts, but the cost of recruiting dedicated quality and inspection staff and maintaining knowledge of the state-of-art in inspection can be prohibitive.

NPL works with small to medium manufacturers to help them to implement measurement good practice within their business so they are able to validate the components they manufacture.

The risk of producing non-conforming parts can be minimised by ensuring staff skills are appropriate and the right measurement equipment is being used at the right time and in the right part of the production process. Building confidence in a company’s quality system, which can be demonstrated to auditors from customers or to a third party, eases the way to winning new business or reducing the need for increased (costly) inspection.

NPL staff have vast experience in industrial metrology and frequent exposure to the latest measurement equipment and methodologies. They evaluate new measurement systems to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to provide practical training on measurement methods.

Benefits realised by MMN members

MMN membership allow companies to keep abreast of emerging technologies and to interact with NPL staff and their manufacturing peers. The result is businesses which are more informed about the future of manufacturing, and the knowledge that they have a support mechanism from NPL, which is there when they need it.

  • A Huddersfield based business was able to win new funding based on precision measurements made by NPL staff which validated claims about their manufacturing process.
  • A West Yorkshire manufacturer invited NPL to evaluate their co-ordinate machine part inspection process. The outcome was a significant saving in time for their part inspection process along with a more robust measurement routine.
  • A business in Huddersfield asked NPL to evaluate their proposal to spend a significant amount of money on a new measurement system. The NPL analysis concluded that their current system was more efficient than the proposed new system, thus saving a potentially large cost to the business.

Manufacturing supply chain success

The NPL Manufacturer Measurement Network offers small businesses:

  • an opportunity to see first-hand how their peers and their customers meet new manufacturing challenges, with an emphasis on part validation
  • seminars on digital manufacturing, robotics and additive manufacturing, and other hot topics chosen by the MMN members themselves
  • the chance to network with other manufacturers at different tiers in supply chains
  • closer links to NPL engineers and scientists at events who are available to speak to members about their measurement challenges.
