Small manufacturing businesses are the lifeblood of UK industry, providing parts and services to primes and higher tier assembly businesses. Being a small manufacturer does not lessen the need to produce quality parts, but the cost of recruiting dedicated quality and inspection staff and maintaining knowledge of the state-of-art in inspection can be prohibitive.
NPL works with small to medium manufacturers to help them to implement measurement good practice within their business so they are able to validate the components they manufacture.
The risk of producing non-conforming parts can be minimised by ensuring staff skills are appropriate and the right measurement equipment is being used at the right time and in the right part of the production process. Building confidence in a company’s quality system, which can be demonstrated to auditors from customers or to a third party, eases the way to winning new business or reducing the need for increased (costly) inspection.
NPL staff have vast experience in industrial metrology and frequent exposure to the latest measurement equipment and methodologies. They evaluate new measurement systems to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to provide practical training on measurement methods.
