NPL's new coordinate measurement system is a new way to measure large objects and position robots with high precision and accuracy.
Manufacturers need to make products quickly and at optimal cost. To do this, emerging and future manufacturing practice will require high-accuracy, flexible metrology systems embedded in processes. However, current solutions such as laser trackers or camera-based technologies limit the adoption of new digital and automated manufacturing. They also can be slow to use, sacrifice accuracy and require periodic factory calibration which results in downtime and lack of user confidence between calibrations.
NPL has developed a new coordinate measurement system which provides solutions to these issues. The system offers first-of-its-kind features such as self-calibration and systematic error correction, the ability to pinpoint the exact location of objects in space using laser technology, a real-time performance indicator and direct traceability to SI metre.
