James joined NPL in March 2012 as a Metrologist and started his working life in a company that machined heat treated parts to customer drawings. He worked on gear cutting, external and internal grinding machines for five years, before transferring to the quality department. While in this department and the quality department of another company, which cast or forged then finished machined components, he measured a variety of complex parts at different stages of the production process. In 2010 he completed his CQI diploma and in 2012 got an MSc in Total Quality Management and Organisational Excellence from Sheffield Hallam University.
