For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

World Metrology Day 2025

20 May 2025

This year we pay homage to the legacy of the Metre Convention

This year, World Metrology Day is dedicated to celebrating a milestone 150 years since the signing of the Metre Convention. This pivotal moment for the international measurement community paved the way for standardised measurement science across the globe. The signing of the Metre Convention, also known as the Treaty of the Metre, by 17 nations led to the subsequent development of the International System of Units (SI) — the globally-agreed system of measurement units, which is necessary to ensure that our everyday measurements remain comparable and consistent worldwide.

This year we pay homage to the legacy of the Metre Convention, as well as our own heritage, as we celebrate NPL’s 125th anniversary and the far-reaching business growth, innovation and impact that our work has supported.
