Delivering secure communications

Computing-png.jpgThe Quantum Communications Hub is led by the University of York. It is a major collaboration of universities, numerous private sector companies and public sector bodies brought together to accelerate the development and commercialisation of quantum secure communications technologies and services.

The Quantum Communications Hub aims to deliver future-proof, practical, secure communications by exploiting the commercialisation potential of existing prototype quantum secure technologies beyond their current limitations. It will contribute to the establishment of a quantum communications technology industry in the UK and to feed its future expansion, competitiveness, diversification and sustainability.

Methods and standards for evaluating security of QKD technologies

NPL is an Associate Partner in the Hub and is providing expertise and facilities to test and evaluate new quantum communications technologies developed and/or deployed by the Hub. NPL has developed methods for evaluating the security of discrete-variable (DV) QKD (quantum key distribution) systems and is extending this to continuous-variable (CV) QKD systems. This work also contributes to the drafting of formal test standards. We are focused on establishing methods for evaluating quantum random number generators which exploit fundamentally random processes of quantum systems.
