For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science.

Developing a pipeline of ‘industry ready’ professionals

In 2015 NPL, the Universities of Strathclyde and Surrey and the Department for Business and Innovation and Skills entered a strategic partnership and established the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science (PGI). The aim was to develop a PhD programme that addressed the need for measurement science to support the development of the UK’s economy and improve quality of life. The programme was to be delivered in partnership with industry and academia, and included student supervision by top UK scientists and research in state-of-the-art facilities at NPL, the University of Surrey, the University of Strathclyde or other partners.

Over the past 5 years, the number of PGI students has steadily increased and we now have over 200 researchers working on measurement related projects. The alumni community has grown to over 140 scientists who are being recognised for their achievements and innovation in diverse sectors.

PGI researchers are making an impact

PGI researchers are doing amazing work

They have published 349 papers, participated in key international conferences and been involved in pioneering research projects. Many researchers have met policy makers and government bodies, have helped to create measurement standards and worked at the interface with industry. They have all received additional skills in metrology, as well as contributed to the success of the PGI conferences – unique meetings of researchers and industry experts working in measurement science.

PGI researchers are upskilling UK industry

Of the 140 graduates who have completed their research 43% have moved into industrial roles, with a number making a rapid move into leadership positions within 3 years of graduation. 48% of our alumni are established in academic and other research roles at prestigious organisations worldwide, with a further 19% becoming full-time researchers at NPL.

"The PGI provides students with industry-relevant experience and enables a smoother transition into an industry role, improving the knowledge and skills transfer from university to industry. Students at the PGI work across a variety of sectors and often on projects that directly collaborate with industry."

Companies across the UK are benefitting from the PGI

We have more than 30 industrial partners who help us ensure that the PGI is aligned with business requirements.
