Higher scientist

Ryan Coones is a Higher Scientist in the Surface Technology group. He joined the group in April 2023 following both his MChem and PhD at the University of Reading.

Ryan’s interests include the development and use of spectroscopic (FTIR and Raman) and scattering (Neutron Reflectometry, Small angle Neutron Scattering, Small Angle X-ray Scattering) methods to characterise materials, their interfaces and interactions. The applications for these techniques include structural and chemical characterisation of surfaces, pharmaceutical analyses, and biological interaction studies.

During his PhD, Ryan worked on investigating polyphenol bioactivity using model lipid membranes. Using spectroscopic and scattering methods he developed and characterised model membrane systems to mimic the human gut, using these models to understand the nutritional and pharmaceutical effects of polyphenolic compounds. While at the University of Reading, Ryan was also part of the academic faculty and taught chemistry and mathematics to undergraduate pharmacists.

Ryan is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
