Maxime Favier

Maxime Favier

Senior scientist

Maxime joined NPL as a Higher Scientist in May 2022.  In the Optical Frequency Metrology group, Maxime is developing an ytterbium optical lattice clock in the newly opened Advanced Quantum Metrology Laboratory. This next-generation optical clock will contribute to optical time scales, and will be used for clock comparisons for metrology and fundamental physics tests.

He received his PhD from Paris University in 2017, under the supervision of Sebastien Bize, working on a mercury optical lattice clock at SYRTE, the French frequency metrology institute.  His PhD work resulted in mercury being accepted as a secondary representation of the SI second.

After this, he spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher at the VU university in Amsterdam, working with Kjeld Eikema on XUV spectroscopy for tests of fundamental physics.

Most recently, Maxime worked for 2.5 years in the group of Serge Haroche at College de France in Paris, building a new optical tweezer platform to perform quantum simulation and metrology with arrays of highly excited “Rydberg” atoms.

Areas of interest

  • Optical clocks and optical frequency comparison technology for future time scales and a redefinition of the second
  • Using atomic clocks and frequency measurements to contribute to improved tests of fundamental physical theories
  • New avenues for quantum sensing and technologies from fundamental atomic physics research
