John Keightley

Principal scientist

John completed his PhD with Imperial College London and has over 25 years of experience in the field of Radionuclide Metrology, joining NPL in 1994. He is responsible for the provision of the UK’s primary standards of radioactivity and has developed considerable skills in theory of 4pb-g Coincidence Counting. He is now responsible for leading equipment developments in the field of high-speed digital electronics for the provision of primary standards of radioactivity and was a pioneer of the “Digital Coincidence Counting” technique. John oversaw the provision of a service to UK hospitals to calibrate radionuclide dose calibrators and drives forward initiatives to improve the quality of radionuclide assay in the Nuclear Medicine field, working with radiopharmaceutical manufacturers in bringing new drugs to clinical trials, and ultimately the market.

John contributes heavily to several national and international committees:

  • Vice President of the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology (ICRM),
  • Chair of the ICRM Radionuclide Metrology Techniques Working Group.
  • Chairs the BIPM Consultative Committee for Ionising Radiation (CCRI) Working Group on Key Comparisons in radioactivity.
  • UK representative for CCRI
  • UK representative for the EURAMET Technical Committee for Ionising Radiation.
  • Active member of the IEC Technical Committee 45 Working Group 9 (Detectors and Systems).

Areas of Interest

Primary Standardisation and nuclear data determination for radioactivity, particularly for radiopharmaceuticals and Targeted Alpha Therapy radionuclides.

Ionisation chambers for secondary standardisations.
