Graeme Finch

Higher scientist

Dr Graeme Finch is a Higher Scientist in the Electronic and Magnetic Materials group. He is involved with the characterisation of magnetic properties of both permanent and soft magnetic materials, taking accredited measurements in lab conditions to real-world environments for a variety of industries. He also has experience in finite element modelling of a range of magnetic and electromagnetic systems, primarily using Comsol Multiphysics. In addition to this, Graeme has a focus on adapting magnetic material measurements and magnetic sensor characterisation to provide novel electromagnetic non-destructive testing solutions as well as validating commercial techniques.

Prior to joining NPL, Graeme completed a Master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Southampton before continuing on to complete a PhD in integrated magnetic resonance, designing and optimising efficient probes for NMR spectroscopy of microfluidic chips.

Graeme is a member of the BSi committee ISE/108: Magnetic Alloys and Steels, and a member of IEC TC68: Magnetic Alloys and Steels. He is also a committee member of the UK Magnetics Society helping to organise events promoting collaboration amongst the magnetics community and bringing people together from industry and academia, and a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining.
