Emma Braysher

Higher Scientist

Dr Emma Braysher is a Higher Scientist at NPL in the Air Quality and Atmospheric Metrology Group. Emma undertakes measurements for the UK Heavy Metals Network and conducts research using ICP-MS/MS. Emma also leads electrometer calibrations for measurement of nanoparticles.

Emma joined NPL in 2015 as a placement student as part of her undergraduate master’s degree at the University of Southampton. During this time Emma worked in the Gas and Particle Metrology group, researching measurement of mercury in ambient air. In 2017, Emma returned to NPL for her doctoral studies in the Nuclear Metrology group. Emma’s PhD, researching development of reference materials and evaluation of decay data in support of characterisation of naturally occurring radioactive material, was awarded by the University of Surrey in 2021. During her PhD, Emma worked closely with the Postgraduate Institute for Measurement Science, of which she became an ambassador for communications. This included editing a quarterly newsletter and chairing the annual conference. Towards the end of her PhD, Emma worked in NPL’s Government Relations team as a Policy Coordinator, during which she was selected to sit on the judging panel for the Civil Service Awards 2021.

Emma is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Society of Radiological Protection and the Government Science and Engineering Profession.
