Andy Pearce

Senior scientist

Andy has been at NPL for over 20 years specialising in radioactivity measurements and standards. During that time he has been involved in developments in almost every nuclear counting technique used at NPL including liquid scintillation counting, gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, ionisation chambers and coincidence counting. He principally works on measurement services and solutions in the radioactivity technical area and his key area of technical expertise is liquid scintillation counting. He has also been an active contributor to the international Decay Data Evaluation Project and helped develop the efficiency curves of the BIPM’s International Reference System (SIR) for gamma emitting radionuclides. He has also taught on a nuclear metrology postgraduate course at the University of Surrey.

His educational background is BSc computational physics at the University of York and MSc radiometric instrumentation and modelling at Liverpool University.

Areas of interest

  • Liquid scintillation counting
  • Ciemat/NIST and TDCR techniques
  • Nuclear decay data evaluation/DDEP
  • Primary and secondary standards of radioactivit
