The science and fiction of science fiction
Alessio Spampinato |
Want to hear from a real scientist about science of science fiction? Come along to hear one of our highly skilled engineers chat about the science of space battles in Star Trek, quantum phenomena in Ant Man, and how some of our sci-fi favourites are a black hole of real scientific intel. |

Mind the gap
John Turland |
Every day, each of us makes dozens of measurements without realising. We use our senses to measure distances that we need to walk or step, we measure the time with our watches (be they smart watches or a less intelligent variety), weigh ourselves or our food, and use GPS to get around.
But can we really trust these measurements? How do we know that we've really weighed out 100g of flour in the kitchen, or that our oven is really set to the correct temperature? John Turland will take us through the inaccuracies of some measurements our phones make, and turn our trust of our senses and tech on its head. |

Bots or brains? The truth about Artificial Intelligence
Valerie Livina |
Is AI really going to take over the world? Is it really making climate change worse? Come along to hear one of our experts in artificial intelligence explain how it all works, what risks we need to be aware of, and what risks remain firmly in the 'myths' category! |

Is the world as safe as it seems? Measuring the likelihood of life's mishaps
Jack Clarke, Hannah Strassburg, Daniel Binks, Callum Whyte |
Fear; it is a basic instinct developed over generations to warn us about danger. Naturally, we tend to think the bigger animals are scarier. People might see a lion, an orca, maybe a big spider, and be gripped by fear, but are there smaller, silent killers that we should be more worried about? |

Measuring a rising tide: satellite observations of sea level.
Emma Wooliams |
Accurate measurements of rising sea levels are not only critical for predicting the future of our coastal regions, but also provide the most direct observations of a changing climate. The Copernicus Sentinel 6 mission tracks subtle shifts in the ocean height, and continues an unbroken 30 year record of global sea levels. In this talk, we'll explore NPL's work in understanding uncertainties in the observations, and preparing for a future mission. |
