Supporting healthcare innovation through measurement

The ageing and growing population is often living with an increased chronic disease burden. We are working to bring medical devices and technologies to market faster, while still meeting stringent regulation and patient safety requirements. We work within the new accelerated access pathways for earlier adoption of technology in the NHS and consumer markets.

As patients are being empowered to manage their own health, including a drive towards digital health, there is a need to support them with new medical devices and technologies. Our work seeks to support the challenges which enable this, by:

  • improving the quantitative understanding of biological systems and processes
  • understanding the complexity of medical devices and technologies, and how that impacts their manufacture, performance and safety assessment inside and outside clinical settings
  • facilitating remote and/or self-monitoring of health conditions
  • supporting the development of new imaging modalities and technologies
  • enabling the implementation of Industry 4.0 to support the digitisation of device manufacture (integrated systems, sensors, additive tech, smart devices)
  • supporting the convergence of omics technologies, informatics and digital (sensors, wearables) technologies
  • accelerating innovation in precision medicine, diagnostics, telemedicine and assisted living technology

Collaborative research to meet emerging healthcare challenges

Our work is supporting innovation and new medical device development through:

  • delivery of the measurement capabilities and standards that support the adoption of advanced manufacturing processes and techniques into healthcare
  • enabling structural and functional measurements at the molecular, subcellular, cell, tissue and organism level
  • enabling the safe use of new medical device technologies such as wearables, diagnostics and bioelectronics by developing validated and standardised analytical methodologies for assessing and validating performance
  • enabling adequate control over the design, test and manufacture of new devices through industry standard QA/QC measurements and reference data
  • providing confidence that technologies and devices being developed meet safety regulations and are brought to the marketplace as quickly and cheaply as possible
  • supporting synthetic biology or additive manufacturing technologies using measurements to enable the implementation of new manufacturing processes

The programmes above are underpinned by our work as the UK’s National metrology institute and the realisation and maintenance of SI units along with primary and secondary standards.
