Emissions inventory for climate action

Understanding emissions on a local and regional scale

Confidence in emissions data for evidence-based decision making

Addressing climate change requires ambitious international action. Confidence in emissions measurement and global greenhouse gas inventories will be vital to support evidence-based decision making. NPL’s research teams are working to understand the measurement and monitoring challenges associated with mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and any consequential environmental impacts such as pollution. These challenges include the need for:

  • accurate, cost-effective, long-term climate and emissions measurement systems, both remotely from space and through direct terrestrial measurement
  • robust climate frameworks and standards applicable on an international scale
  • development of cost-effective pollution monitoring technologies to support diverse management and compliance requirements

If you believe our expertise can help in your area of work, please contact the team and discuss your challenge.

Emissions measurement quality

Our work is helping to deliver accurate and reliable data for emissions inventories at national and regional levels through:

  • undertaking composition measurements, monitoring and ambient air quality analysis, both in-situ and remotely, to enable an understanding of current emissions and the impact of initiatives implemented to drive reduction
  • accurate, representative measurement of a diverse range of environmental pollutants
  • understanding the source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  • development of sensor networks, combining in-situ, in-atmosphere and remote observation, to provide actual GHG emissions inventory in the UK.

Learn more about working with NPL

The UK Government has set ambitious targets for transforming the UK’s energy system, outlined in the 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, the Energy White Paper and the Clean Growth Strategy, which provide a robust framework for how the UK can deliver on climate action and meet these targets.

NPL is working to deliver these strategies. We support world-leading innovation, and our research is helping to drive cost reductions and ensure the deployment of low-carbon technologies. NPL’s research is also increasing the understanding of emissions and pollution, and we are working to improve how we measure key climate variables both on the ground and from space. We apply the latest advances in measurement science to make every stage of energy generation, transport and usage more efficient, safe and affordable, and to improve the quality of data available on the state of our climate and natural environment.
