Liquid exfoliation is one of the key technologies being used to manufacture nanomaterials, such as graphene, at industrial scale. It exfoliates, or separates, the individual particles from the bulk without using toxic chemicals and gases. However, the process is not perfect and the addition of chemicals such as surfactants can affect the quality and purity of the finished materials.
Using its expertise in process ultrasound, NPL has developed a licensable technology to produce nanomaterials which uses a combination of ultrasonic fields to enhance the liquid exfoliation process. Aimed at improving yields and reducing the need for additional chemical additives or surfactants, this technology can offer existing and new manufacturers a new scalable tool for producing higher yields or different grades of materials.
Coupled with expert consultancy support from NPL and links with UK original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) capable of producing plant-ready equipment, this technology is ready to support companies with a new bolt-on manufacturing solution.
