NPLTime® achieves UKAS accreditation

Supporting industry, enabling innovation and delivering confidence.

3 minute read

NPLTime® services from NPL offer users a time signal that is traceable to Coordinated Universal Time UTC(NPL), not dependent on GNSS. Time is more crucial than ever to industry and society, with uses ranging from everyday positioning tools such as satnavs, to playing a key role in industries such as transport, energy and broadcast.

NPLTime® has now achieved UKAS accreditation, marking a significant milestone, demonstrating that the service meets internationally recognised standards for competence, accuracy and quality assurance.

Over the past 8 years, NPL has been disseminating NPLTime® to support industry and has recently partnered with VodafoneThree to develop a terrestrial timing signal that meets stringent International Telecommunication Union standards for accuracy.

UKAS accreditation provides assurance that measurements and data from NPLTime® are robust, traceable, and globally recognised, supporting compliance, improving interoperability, and reducing risk in applications where precise timing is critical, from telecommunications and finance to emerging technologies.

Amal Lavender, Head of Assurance, NPL said: “I’m proud of the NPLTime® team for achieving UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025. This independent, external assurance gives confidence in the competence, traceability and reliability of our testing and calibration, strengthening the UK’s National Quality Infrastructure and reinforcing trust in something we all rely on: time.”

Jay Garwood, NTC Senior Operations Lead, NPL said: “This accreditation is more than a certification – it reflects the commitment, collaboration and professionalism across our teams. Everyone involved in NPLTime® has played a part in reaching this standard, and this achievement is something we should all take pride in.”
