For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Metrology has played a pivotal role in shaping Europe’s innovation landscape, as highlighted in a new EURAMET report led by NPL. The findings reveal that European metrology research programmes have generated an impressive €1.6 billion in economic turnover, from the development of advanced products and services across multiple industries.

Through the European Metrology Research Programmes (EMRP) and the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), NPL and its partners have strengthened Europe’s measurement science capabilities. These collaborative initiatives have enabled National Metrology Institutes to share expertise and resources, reducing duplication and achieving critical mass in priority areas.

Early adopters of research outcomes particularly in instrumentation and accredited laboratory sectors attribute €340 million directly to these programmes.

Building on this success, the Metrology Partnership, co-funded by EU Members and other Associated States and the European Union with an anticipated budget of €690 million, aims to create a sustainable, world-class European metrology system. This will ensure that cutting-edge measurement capabilities are widely accessible to innovators across industries.

Evaluations by the European Commission highlights how metrology is important for Europe’s scientific and industrial leadership. NPL’s contributions have been central to delivering advanced measurement solutions that underpin competitiveness, innovation, and societal progress.

Robert Gunn, NPL’s Head of International said: “NPL is a very active participant in the collaborative research projects that are delivering this large economic benefit. We are also pleased that we could use our expertise in economic analysis and evaluation to provide the evidence of the great value investment in metrology research can bring.”
