NPL welcomes the recent announcement from G7 leaders committing, for the first time, to coordinated international efforts to advance quantum technologies across research, commercialisation and security. With quantum technologies being identified as critical to economic growth, national security and global innovation, this commitment is vital in pursuing its full potential.
We know the vital role that international collaboration between governments, industry and fellow National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) plays in supporting the growth and acceleration of the technologies. We’re delighted that the NMI-Q initiative, where the NMIs from the G7 countries as well as Australia, who will collaborate to drive forward essential measurement and testing work, is set to launch this year.
This year marks 100 years of quantum, recognised by UNESCO and celebrated through multiple International Year of Quantum events and activities. This presents a fantastic opportunity to continue to raise awareness of the role quantum technologies play in creating economic and social impact. We are committed to being at the forefront of this movement, facilitating advancements that will benefit society as a whole.
In November, NPL will host an event to celebrate the International Year of Quantum, bringing together experts to discuss the future of quantum technologies and how metrology can unlock its impact. The founding members of the NMI-Q initiative will form the steering committee for the event and will be crucial in ensuring that key international stakeholders are involved in conversations around the future of quantum technologies. This event aims to highlight the importance of continued investment and collaboration in the field, ensuring that the UK remains a leader in quantum research and development.
As the world increasingly recognises the significance of quantum technologies, NPL stands ready to contribute to this global effort, driving forward the research and innovation necessary to harness the full potential of quantum advancements.
UK Science Minister, Lord Vallance said:
“The potential of quantum technology to boost economic growth, and strengthen national security is being increasingly recognised across the world, and we want to unleash that potential here in the UK, to help deliver on our Plan for Change.
“The UK’s leadership on National Metrology Institutes-Quantum – now with support from the G7 and Australia – will accelerate the commercialisation and rollout of quantum technologies across the economy, paving the way for innovations like improved medical imaging and more resilient critical infrastructure."
