For people, place, prosperity and planet, we deliver impact with measurement science

Electromagnetics

5G communications

Delivering real benefits to consumers by establishing measurement infrastructure that gives them confidence in their connection

High bandwidth mobile communication is an essential tool for all citizens, and is expected to grow at 40% per year. The next generation of network technology will be 5G and is planned for deployment in 2020. It is expected to operate at different frequencies above 6 GHz, support a significantly increased user density and have seamless connectivity, low energy consumption and greater capacity than the current 4G networks.

It is critical that the UK increases activity around radio innovation to remain competitive with the rest of the world. Network innovation presents the UK with a unique proposition to lead the world, creating new jobs and wealth whilst providing the enabling technologies to create the most advanced critical national infrastructure in the world. Improved networks address the massive socio-economic challenges resulting from an increasing population, demographic changes, ageing population, energy challenges, congested cities and overloaded transport systems.

Our main research areas are:

  • Measurements of small and smart antennas
  • Wireless propagation and interference effects
  • Characterisation of wireless sensor networks and the associated uncertainty of system measurands
  • Theoretical and experimental aspects of wireless, optical and antenna systems.
  • Quantification of the resilience and reliability of wireless networks in a dense radio environment
  • Signal propagation and interference
  • Characterisation of small and smart antennas
  • Measurements of digital waveform parameters such as jitter and EVM, Bit-Error-Rate (BER)

We cover both measurements relating to individual components or subsystems and whole system performance.
