Rudra is a Senior Scientist in the Electrochemistry Group at NPL, developing and applying world-leading measurement capabilities for electrochemical technologies, including batteries, catalysis, and sensors. His expertise spans operando metrology, hybrid and multi-modal measurements, and metrology for critical materials, supporting industry and academia in solving real-world challenges and accelerating the development of emerging technologies.
Following an undergraduate honours degree in Chemistry from Presidency College (University of Calcutta, India), Rudra went on to do an MS-PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His PhD thesis focussed on electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of haem-based biomolecules. After his PhD, Rudra completed a post-doctoral assignment at the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Strathclyde, before joining NPL Electrochemistry in August 2021.
Rudra’s research at NPL primarily involves designing and delivering minimally invasive operando techniques to probe electrochemical phenomena at different length and timescales, effectively bridging materials- based measurands with device- based measurands. A core part of this work has involved vibrational spectroscopic methods including Raman and FTIR. Ongoing projects involve multi-modal measurements, hybrid approaches to improve battery metrology, and close collaboration with the Digital Electrochemistry theme at NPL exploring automation and understanding ontologies among electrochemical measurands. Rudra has led and delivered several industry-focussed grant projects (UKRI, Royce ICP) with UK based SMEs in the battery, hydrogen, and biosensors space. He is also actively involved in directly- contracted commercial R&D with UK- based industries, supporting materials and product development.
Rudra is a member of the American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, and Materials Research Society, and he currently holds a visiting position at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London. He also serves as the UK Chair of the BSI SMI/I (Speciality Metals and Mirrors) which mirrors the ISO/TC 345 (Materials for Speciality Technologies) – focussing on metrology and standardisation in critical materials.
