 Maryana Baran

Scientist

Maryana Baran is a Scientist in the Biometrology Group at NPL. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Bioengineering at King’s College London, where her research focuses on developing advanced tools to modulate cellular and matrix cues in 3D disease models. Her work involves designing, synthesising, and characterising complex peptides for use in biomaterials and therapeutic delivery.

Maryana earned an MRes in Organic Chemistry: Drug Discovery from UCL, where she worked on the design and synthesis of HDAC inhibitors for cancer treatment. Before joining NPL in 2021, she gained valuable industry experience in peptide synthesis, purification, and quality control.

At NPL, Maryana’s research focuses on the development and characterisation of peptide-based materials. She applies a range of techniques to design and synthesise novel peptides, and to explore their structural properties and potential applications in bioengineering. Her work includes using a variety of biochemical, biophysical, and analytical methods to study peptide behaviour and performance in different systems.

Areas of interest

  • Development of peptide-based materials for bioengineering applications
  • Tissue engineering and 3D scaffold materials
  • Peptide-based delivery agents
  • Peptide design, synthesis, and biophysical characterisation.
