Dr Martin Milton is a physicist with lifelong experience in metrology.
He was Director of the BIPM in Sèvres (France) for 13 years. During this time, the BIPM introduced new definitions of the SI base units, changing the global framework for measurement. He also led the organisation’s digital transformation, modernising metrology services. In 2022, he secured approval from Member States for an initiative to increase participation in the BIPM’s global work, with the aim of achieving universal participation.
Before joining the BIPM, Dr Milton worked at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), where he was a Fellow in the Analytical Science Division.
He studied physics at the University of Oxford, and holds a PhD in laser physics from the University of Southampton and an MBA from London Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
In June 2025, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
