Higher scientist

Martin Knapp is a higher scientist in the Atomic Clocks and Sensors group within the Time and Frequency department.

Martin’s research is focused primarily on the miniaturisation of microwave atomic clocks for real-world applications outside of specialist research laboratories. This includes the development of various atomic clock subsystems such as: compact optical setups, ultra-high vacuum systems, software for automated experimental control, and both digital and RF electronics. 

Martin joined NPL in 2018 as a research scientist after completing an MPhys in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of Sussex. Martin spent a year working across several different atomic clock projects before starting his DPhil with University of Oxford in 2019. In 2024, Martin was awarded a DPhil for his work titled “A Compact Cold-Atom Microwave Clock Prototype”. After this, Martin stayed at NPL where he now works as a higher scientist.
